Evening Peak Optimized Wind Sites in India
The Indian energy market is transforming. This transformation creates enormous untapped potential, but it also poses certain challenges. Energy demand in India is particularly high in the evening and at night, i.e. at times when the sun is not shining. Therefore, alternatives are needed. This website presents key findings of a study which assessed wind power as an alternative to cater the increasing peak electricity demand at night.
It needs to be evaluated whether wind farms yield enough energy during peak demand times to be a reliant energy source. If this is the case, wind farms could replace energy production with coal-fired power plants in the peak demand time and lower the overall energy production by fossil fuels. Furthermore, newly built wind farms could lead to an even more flexible operation of existing coal-fired power plants and an emerging energy mix, which again leads to fewer CO₂ emissions. This would help India achieve its climate goals for 2030.
What potential does onshore and offshore wind energy offer to meet the demand during peak energy demand times? On this website, you can find out more about the results and the methodology.
